Its terrain is made up of jagged rocks, sand washes, a dry lake bed, tide pools, mud, silt beds, you name it. If you’re a snake or a lizard, it’s paradise. If you’re an automobile or truck, it’s hell.<br>Yet it was on this God-forsaken strip of land that an Isuzu 4x4 pick-up finished first among imported trucks during a recent Baja 1000. It was the only diesel entry in the entire race.<br>The achievement becomes even more heroic when one considers these facts.<br>The Baja 1000 is usually entered at substantial cost with crews, drivers and multiple truck entries. The Isuzu 4x4 was a single entry, with only its driver and owner, Henry Simpson, his co-driver, John Comacho, and a very small crew.<br>Not only that, all the other entries benefitted from highly modified racing engines and transmissions. The Isuzu used only a stock diesel engine and transmission.<br>All of which goes to prove what a land of opportunity America truly is.
